Clap out the rhythm from sight-reading book, measure by measure

Introduced the following types of notes:

  • Whole notes
  • Half notes
  • Quarter notes
  • Eighth notes
  • Dotted notes

Five-Finger Exercise

Both Hands: 1-2-3-4-5-5-4-3-2-1

Left Hand: 1-2-3-4-5-5-4-3-2-1

Right Hand: 5-4-3-2-1-1-2-3-4-5

Pro Tip: Remember to keep your fingers on the piano keys at all times

C Major Scale (5-Finger Cross Over)

Use fingers in the following manner to play C Major Scale:

Left Hand: C1-D2-E3-F4-G5-A1-B2-C3

  • Left hand crossed between G to A, 5th finger to 1st finger

Right Hand: C1-D2-E3-F1-G2-A3-B4-C5

  • Right hand crossed between E to F, 3rd finger to 1st finger

Improvisation Practice

First improv exercise: Benjamin plays bass notes and Devin plays melody notes

Second improv exercise: Devin plays both the bass notes and melody notes

  • Devin plays the same bass note with the left hand repetitively in rhythm
  • Devin plays a melody of his choosing with the right hand in any rhythm he wants

Third improv exercise: Devin plays both bass and melody notes while holding down the sustain pedal
